Introduction

Truly industry-leading wheel-to-wheel race training! This 3-day race license course is considered the hallmark of our reputation for race training the way it should be done. New for 2014 is the almost twice as long track which has just been built for our use here at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (previously Mosport). We, and therefore you, both benefit from the unique provision of a purpose-built Driver Development Track which enables unmatched progression in North-America. The combination of our 2008 Van Diemen cars and this new longer, wider and more exciting track will provide the best training environment we've had in 32 years. Please compare with any other race license school on the continent (especially day 3)!


CASC and SCCA Race Licenses

Successful graduates can immediately apply for either CASC Canadian Regional Race License or SCCA American Novice Permit.

Alternatively, you can apply for a SCCA Full Competition License after just one race event! Our AR and WWR courses were awarded the 2nd highest level of SCCA accreditation (Novice Permit with a two race weekend credit) whereby after you successfully run only one SCCA accredited event (such as a regional race weekend or our own Single or Double Race Day events), you can apply for immediate upgrade to a SCCA Full Competition License!

Day 1

The class will prep you for your driving exercises. Your on-track sessions start with Heel-and-Toe Shifting in 'your' Van Diemen Formula SCCA and will progress to lapping the full track, chasing the instructor's pace car! Even on your first day you will already appreciate the advantages of training on a safe but challenging Driver Development Track!

Day 2

Your day starts with a lead-follow-drop-back session and then 2 lead-follow-pass-by sessions. With that training under your belt, driving activity progresses to 2 fully-open lapping practice sessions, each with transponder timing and personal critique from your instructor. The goal will be safe, consistant and accurate speed!

Day 3

Race Training Day! This is what it's all about! You will practice the fundamentals of race passes, rolling 'side by side' starts, risk management in race traffic and race strategy. Check this out: during starts practice and the practice race, your coach will be in a race car dog fighting wheel-to-wheel with you. Neither of you will miss a single training element. Between sessions, drivers will enjoy the air conditioned 2nd floor Observation Lounge of the new Corporate Event Centre. Compare this true racing training to other schools!

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Driver Development Centre

NEW STARTING IN 2014! Purpose-built training track designed from the ground up expressly for driver development. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park owners Carlo Fidani and Ron Fellows have totally revamped the Driver Development Centre! In contrast to our previous 1.7km track length, the new track offers two configurations of 2.2km (intermediate) and 2.9km (advanced).

We provide the opportunity for our customers to be responsible for only a very small portion of the car's value in this course. (The “all in” investment of each of our Van Diemen race cars is $72,000.) Data from our recent history (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) indicates that after thousands of race car laps, there were only 4 chargeable damages: $703, $647, $1000, $2147.

Our automatic damage responsibility amount is $10,000 CDN. (A $5000 deposit is acquired at your onsite registration for your course when you arrive.)

By choosing our Academy, you can enjoy a very low Damage Responsibility Reduction Fee of $235 CDN + 13% sales tax to lower your maximum (per occurrence, even though damages are very rare) to only $1900 CDN! (A $1500 deposit is acquired at your onsite registration for your course when you arrive.)

Should a race car be damaged, drivers are only responsible for up to the amount shown at right in any single incident. Considering the potential of some damage, it is only fair that drivers have this minor amount “on the line”. This is really a bonus! Consider that the next time you get in a racecar, you may not enjoy this consideration and might be accountable for the entire cost of the race car!

Compare with other schools and their offers (if any!) of limiting damage responsibility. Remember, the safety of the track is an integral function of the probability of a crash and the extent of damage. Compare facilities! Compare walls and guardrails! There is no driver damage responsibility for damage clearly resulting from mechanical failure!

While there are many advantages to a driver development track that doesn't contain the 120 mph sweepers, walls & guardrails of Pro Tracks, one of the deterrents can be the comfort / safety level. Some of the more aggressive drivers may feel comfortable with exceeding their capabilities, and thus they may slide off the track.

These seemingly innocent slides through the dirt & rocks eventually require additional maintenance. For 24 years it's been our philosophy that the clean drivers shouldn't share in the cost of this unnecessary / extra maintenance. Thus, only the drivers who choose to exceed their capabilities & skid all 4 wheels off the track are asked to pay towards the maintaining of the fleet.

  • Day 1: None.
  • Day 2: First two are not charged, then if a driver loses control to the point of going all 4 wheels off, the charge will be $200 CDN each.
  • Day 3: Again the first two are not charged, then if a driver loses control to the point of going all 4 wheels off, the charge will be $200 CDN each.

We hope you won't be overly concerned about the above, since the drivers themselves are in control of these occurrences. Most participants still enjoy spirited driving without needing to be spinning out repetitiously to have fun!
